CSA, 9/23

In this week's share we got apples, peppers, cucumber and green beans. For some reason, I also put the zucchini in this picture, but I didn't get those from the CSA!

I have apples coming out of my ears. I have a apple dumpling recipe that I want to try and we are eating apples at every meal I think! We love apples though, so having too many is a good thing. Any one have suggestions for how to use up a bunch of apples? maybe I could make some applesauce this weekend?

I remember you made home made apple sauce one time in Grandma's basement and it was delish! And it's not a FM....

Can't you cook them down and freeze them for future pies or toppings on stuff?

I was thinking about making some applesauce, too. But those yellow ones are wonderful for eating just as they are. I don't think I will have any left.

Dumplings also sound good. I haven't had a dumpling in a very long time.

Has Brenna seen Sid The Science Kid on PBS? Her "twin," Colin really likes it. And they just did applesauce last week which made Colin want to make some. He'd be all over it if you used some of the apples for that. :-)

Hi Heather! I found you through Farmer John's August newsletter. Love reading a blog belonging to "fellow midwesterner"! (I admit to being a midwesterner on my blog, but not much more than that--I guess I'm paranoid! And I've had some God-haters drop by my blog so dh wants me to be careful)

Anyway!

I know this post is a month old, but I hope you got a lot of good out of your apples. We still have a few to process, but we went through a thousand easily. What a great year for apples! We made apple juice, apple pie filling for the freezer and a ton of applesauce. We dried a bunch, and I think with these last ones I'm going to slice them horizontally and dry them for garlands. I did that once and they lasted for 4 years...so pretty. You just have to spray them with an acrylic sealant.

Anyway, loved reading your blog, we too live in the E area. Haven't been to Shepherd's Valley yet, but am thrilled to have just discovered it! Wow! Have a great week!
